Character Study
Janine Butcher - EastEnders
From a young age Janine Butcher has been a difficult and troublesome character, known as the rebel and then developing into the vamp.
Her first appearance was in 1989, since then she had been a rebellious child who threw tantrums, stole things, self harmed, lied compulsively and hated Pat Butcher her step-mother. The character made life difficult for her family and she was soon abandoned by her father in 1994 but returns again in 1998.
After leaving the show in 1996 she returned in 1999 to live with her father Frank and his new wife Peggy whom she intended to split up due to her
rebellious and hateful nature. In attempt to infuriate Frank she sleeps with a character called Jamie thus creating her stereotype of the vamp and spreads around rumors of his inadequacy in bed, which drives Frank to abandon her in 2000 when his marriage with Peggy breaks down.
Janine is taken in by Terry Raymond, whom she starts a business with as estate agents, however she uses him for money and purposefully dresses like his deceased daughter. Regarding Terry's relationships with women, Janine breaks them apart herself and tries to seduce him. Similarly she begins sleeping with Billy Mitchell at the same time until he runs out of money.
Soon after this Janine grew an addiction to cocaine and pestered Terry for money however when she refused she developed a sexual relationship with her dealer in exchange for drugs. This pushes Terry to the limit and he forces Janine to leave and then he moves away from Walford.
The vamp stereotype is known for using sex and sexual advances to their benefit and then abandoning everything when they have what they want without remorse, this perfectly describes Janine when she turns to prostitution as one of her clients, Ian Beale, becomes a victim of her blackmail in order to get money when she threatens to tell his wife. She gives up prostitution after nearly dying of alcohol poisoning.
Continuing with the vamp stereotype Janine seduces her new boss at the car lot, Barry Evans, in order to to fleece him of his money, however she is sleeping with her partner in crime Paul. After moving in with Barry to move along the process he proposes to her and she accepts thinking he has a heart murmur and will die soon enough. They marry on New Years Eve 2003, soon after it is revealed that Barry's health scare was no cause for concern which makes Janine crack and confess everything to Barry, shortly after killing him and watching him die thus transforming her whole stereotype into the super villain, even more so when Pat brands her as "pure evil".
Back in 2008 Janine masquerades under a Jewish name in able for her to marry an elderly Jewish man for his money however after the wedding he has a heart attack and Janine is left a homeless vamp and returns to Walford where she blackmails fellow citizens.
Vamp Janine begins sleeping with her flat mate Ryan Malloy and together they plan to con Archie Mitchell. During the Christmas episode after Archie and Janine had announced their engagement, Archie realises her plans and throws her out on the streets. She is suspected for the murder that occurred later in that episode however it is later proved she is innocent.
In July 2011 Janine inherits a vast amount of money from her grandmothers will, making her a millionaire. This event proves the character of Janine is changing as she had grown to love her grandmother while she had been taking care of her in the weakened state before death, however there is no particular stereotype to distinguish her new character.
Later a relationship is developed between Janine and Michael Moon, from which she becomes pregnant and accepts Michael's proposal, making him sign a prenuptial agreement. However on their wedding day Michael presents Janine with an ultimatum, to either rip up the contract otherwise the wedding is off. As a result Janine rips up the contract fully proving she is not a vamp but instead is ready to settle down and be a mother, although soon after giving birth Janine packs her bags and leaves Michael with baby Scarlett.
Several months later Janine returns and manipulates Michael to giving her custody of Scarlett with her old vamp ways, and leaves once again.
In her last return Janine is stereotyped as a vamp due to seducing one of her employees. Increasing disputes between Janine and her most recent ex-husband, Michael, lead to him plotting her murder, however Janine finds out from her nanny, Alice, that he is planning to kill her. When Janine confronts him he tries to strangle her but is stabbed by Alice. When Alice runs off to answer the door it becomes apparent that she did not kill him and Janine stabs him once more to finish the job, fully emulating the vamp she always has been.
After negotiating with Kat Moon to give her a false witness she is released from prison and in March 2014 Janine left for France with to be with her daughter.
